Raphidonema are calcareous sponges that were widespread in the Cretaceous from England to India. Their flat shell shape encrusted hard surfaces quite quickly, where they used small ciliated cells to channel streams of water into their pores for filtration. In addition to a skeleton of calcareous needles, they also had a second superordinate skeleton of solid limestone.
