Product information "Steneosaurus tooth, Holzmaden, GER"

Tooth of a marine crocodile in matrix, plus posidonia shells and ammonite impressions.

With its wonderfully preserved fossils, the Holzmaden deposit is world famous. Amongst vast quantities of Dactylioceras ammonites lie complete ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs, pterosaurs and marine crocodiles. It is thought that poor water circulation created anoxia (= complete absence of oxygen) at the bottom, so that scavengers and decomposers could not disintegrate the bodies of dead animals.
A label with this information is included with the fossil.

Age: Lower Jurassic, Posidonia shale
Locality: Holzmaden, Baden-Württemberg, Germany
Size/tooth: 12 mm, matrix: 11 x 20 x 2 cm

Colors on pictures may differ slightly from those of the original piece due to technical reasons.
