In the Miocene, large parts of southern Styria were covered by a tropical shallow sea. A volcanic eruption occurred which covered the seabed with a thick layer of basalt, preserving snails, shells and other material. As a result of the work in the quarry, the clay marl layer underneath the basalt was excavated, where the preserved fossils were found. Around 100 different species have been identified.
